Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: “If you said to your companion: ‘Be quiet and listen’ on Friday while the Imām is delivering the sermon, then you would be guilty of idle talk.” Sahih/Authentic. – [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

EXPLANATION

From the greatest rites of Friday is the 2 Khutbah’s, and one of its purposes is to advise & direct the people. One of the obligatory manners the listener has to observe is to listen attentively to the Imam in order to contemplate the Khutbah.  That is why the Prophet (may Allah’s peace & blessings be upon him) warned against speaking, even with a few words, such as forbidding one’s companion from speaking by merely saying: “Be quiet & listen.” Whoever speaks while the Imam is delivering the sermon is guilty of IDLE TALK, and is thus deprived of the virtue of attending the Friday prayer, because he has done something that distracts him as well as others from listening to the Khutbah.

BENEFITS FROM THE HADITH

  • One is required to attentively listen to the Friday Khutbah. The scholars agreed that this obligatory.
  • It is prohibited to talk during the Friday Khutbah, for this contradicts the solemnity of the situation, even if one speaks to prevent something wrong, return a greeting, respond to the sneezing person, or anything else that involves talking to others.
  • An exception is when one speaks to the Imam or the Imam speaks to him.
  • Moreover, the scholars excluded from this ruling those who cannot hear the Imam because of distance. They do not have to remain silent; rather, they should preoccupy themselves with the recitation of the Qur’an or the remembrance of Allah. As for a person who cannot hear the Imam because of deafness, he should not distract those around by loud recitation, he should engage in this quietly.
  • The PENALTYfor someone who speaks during the Khutbah is to be DEPRIVED OF THE MERIT & REWARD of the Friday prayer.
  • It is permissible to talk between the 2 Khutbah’s.
  • If the Prophet (may Allah’s peace & blessings be upon him) is mentioned during the sermon, you should inaudiblyinvoke Allah’s blessings upon him, and thus you are acting in compliance with the relevant Hadiths. The same applies to saying ‘Ameen’ after supplications.
